Re: Visitor killed by rockfall near East side tunnel

My heart aches for this family. Such a random tragedy. Can't imagine the pain of losing a daughter like that.

Looks like Boulder Pass re-opened as of the latest trail status.

You may now resume your Northern Traverses :)

Boulder Pass - Trail Closure

It's early in the season for the Boulder Pass, but I just came across this on the trail status: https://home1.nps.gov/applications/glac/trail/trailstatus.cfm?t=NF TRAIL CLOSED: Fromm Upper Kintla campground to junction with Brown Pass for carcass and bear activity per N12 T. Cheatum 7/6/19 No doubt ...

Re: 2019 Backcountry Permits

QUESTIONS: Has anyone been at REF or REH? Can anyone comment on the food storage set up there? Is it a standard cable (more capacity) or a skinny pole (can be crowded) or a bear box? I know the general area was burned, but is there any remaining shade where you hang your food? My son and I did St M...

Re: 2019 Backcountry Permits

Wow, the only date left in the range provided for my first choice. I'll add MAN upfront as walkin or group site starting from Siyeh Bend going over Piegan. So excited. ENTER - ICEBERG/PTARMIGAN (TRAILHEAD) .... EXIT - KINTLA LAKE (TRAILHEAD) Segment; Length 11.60 Elevation; Up 0 | Down 400 TOTALS; ...

Re: 2019 Backcountry Permits

You probably want to check the trail status before your hike. Boulder pass might have quite a bit of snow left in mid-July. You may need some traction or self-arrest equipment. On the other hand, lately it seems like the pass has melted out early the last few seasons. You never know. That was the f...

Re: 2019 Backcountry Permits

This was our first choice. Was not expecting to get it at this point in the process! The remoteness of Kintla Lake and the prospect of starting a hike from there was what got my son and I interested in backcountry hikes 2 years ago on our first visit to Glacier. Now to figuring out transportation be...

Re: Logan Pass crowds - 8 a.m.

Due to this thread and our upcoming trip to Glacier, I decided to try and leverage the GNP webcams a bit and try and gauge how early Logans Pass fills up. I used a an app called Blit to take a screenshot of the Logan Pass webcam every half hour from 6AM to 7PM for the past several days. Here are the...

Go my permit back today. Re: 2018 Backcountry Permit Buzz

So, I am under the impression that during the peak of permit season, the BC office works flat out. You have to appreciate the effort. But good grief, I fail to see why any of this is not automated at this point. Suppose it could be because it is a "little used" federal system; which means...

I've had many of the same observations Paul. Frustrating. But if worse come to worse I'll still be there and will try and make some walk-up magic happen :)

Hey good find! I searched briefly but did not come up with that :)

That story you related regarding the urologist moving to Kalispell is great.

Moving to Montana

Our family currently resides in Texas and visited GNP last year on a Grand Tour of the West (GNP, Banff, Yellowstone, Moab). Favorite area by far was GNP and we look forward to returning and exploring the area for many years to come. I'm a software developer and my wife is a teacher, so we could rea...

Re: 2018 Backcountry Permit Buzz

In all honesty, all of this seems tremendously anachronistic. Why are all advanced reservations for the upcoming season opened for reservation the same day? And why is park staff intervention required for each itinerary? I'd suggest three major improvements, none of which would tremendously difficul...

Re: 2018 Backcountry Permit Buzz

Pretty simple solution to all this from a capacity planning perspective: don't make it first come, first serve. Give advanced reservations a time window (several days, a week, whatever), and then do a lottery based on the responses received during that window. Not sure why anyone uses first come, fi...
