Re: Suspicious Fires in North Fork

A $10,000 reward is being offered to track down the person(s) who committed this act. If you know anything, turn them in. See the accompanying link:

Re: Ranger Lyle

If my recollection is correct, Ranger Lyle has not been the ranger at Kintla since the 2017 season. In 2018 I think the ranger posted there was Astrid(?) but she moved on elsewhere in the park I believe. Not sure who the ranger was in 2019 as I was up there early in the season and ran into some of t...

Re: Pay phone at Many Glacier or Swiftcurrent?

The results: By using a prepaid phone card making calls from the Swiftcurrent campstore phones and/or the pay phones at MG lodge worked fine. The condition that occurred was when attempting to key in the numbers/codes to retrieve voice messages these phones didn't really accept or work properly for ...

Pay phone at Many Glacier or Swiftcurrent?

For visiting friends...are there still pay phones at Swiftcurrent or Many Glacier? I know cell phone coverage used to sort of work around Babb and St. Mary, but for them to avoid the drive to check their voice messages are pay phones still available around Many Glacier? I haven't checked the cell ph...

Re: How Climate Change Is Wiping Out This National Park

I appreciate reading the data and input on this subject. When I first came to Glacier in 1982 I was told, by GNP, that the Glaciers had been melting for thousands of years. (I don't recall whether it was 2000 or 20000) I mention this because both time frames put the melting far ahead of the impacts ...

Re: New Firebrand Hotel, Whitefish

We have stayed at the Firebrand on two occassions. Once last Summer and then again in December. We expect to pay a lot more during high season. These places, regardless of their size and quality, have to make money during the high seasons to provide what they provide. It is just the nature of the bu...

Re: Tupelo Grill-Whitefish MT

We have been to Tupelo numerous times and have never been disappointed. Great dinner. Great service. All around reliable place to have a nice dinner out. Likewise we frequent Latitude 48 and have had terrific dining experiences there as well. We've been to some of the other restaurants around the va...

Re: How Climate Change Is Wiping Out This National Park

It is hard to not notice over the years how many people have jumped on the man-made climate change topic as a mantra in their life. I have always been skeptical of this given the short historical time frame we have to compare against the thousands of years (millions really) of climate processes/cycl...

Re: Big fee increases may be in the future...

The Kansas / North Carolina thing is simply a way of showing the idioacy of different fee amounts for different citizens..just because they live close(r) to the park. I even question the appropriateness of the lifetime pass at 62. The total local economy around the park benefits from the tourism, ev...

Re: Big fee increases may be in the future...

There is no justification for locals to get a better deal than others for entry to a federal property. With that reasoning a person from, let's say Kansas, should pay less than someone from North Carolina just because their residence is much closer to the park. What a private business/resort/enterta...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

Mattb: Wow. You have totally misconstrued what I was saying. The stock price and losing team statements are simply intended as analogies of how other systems hold those at the top responsible for failure. Government systems are not good at holding the top people accountable. Please don't stretch thi...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

Mattb: Fires have a way of blowing up and being unpredictable. We all know that. It was a bone dry season. No fire anywhere in that vicinity should have been left to expand. Put the retardant on it. Put it out. Had that been attempted and the outcome was still that Sperry burned, I would still be sa...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

Mattb: It is all about the location of the Sprague fire initial lightning strike and its close proximity to the historical gems that exist nearby. The inept decision making is to not have quashed this fire with retardant when it was small until it was done. It is not a question of funds. If it were ...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

B2Randolph...I live very near. I am in the line of fire. I had a visual of the Sprague fire and others almost every day. We all understand the erratic nature of these natural events. The criticism I am leveling is not directed at the people on the ground fighting the fires. The point remains that th...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

Gosh MattB, you suggested that losing Sperry Chalet was due to a lack of funding for the parks. I simply pointed out that this is the "go to" excuse that government agencies typically use as the reason they are not effectively managed and then no one is ever held accountable for their inep...
