Re: Sun, Rain, Snow, Repeat: GNP Sept 2014

Had to go cold turkey on this forum in order to commit to a trip to North Cascades in August, I miss Glacier so much, I can only hope NC is half as good as Glacier, also no where near the support and resources for making a trip there (i.e. the Chatters). Upside is less pressure on the trails, more l...

Re: Sun, Rain, Snow, Repeat: GNP Sept 2014

Sun, Rain, Snow, Repeat: Day Three was full of Sun and the first day of our 3 night GUN/ELL/SPE backpacking trip. We drove our rental up from McDonald to Logan and immediately hopped on a down shuttle to the Gunsight trail head. There was a lot of bear scat on the gentle descent to Reynolds Creek wh...

After we looked at the pictures it did look pretty slippery. At the time the wind was more of a concern, especially the short trip around the corner on the ledge to get to the summit ridge.

Re: Sun, Rain, Snow, Repeat: GNP Sept 2014

Labor Day at Glacier had us attempting to summit Mount Reynolds. We tried to get to Logan early to avoid the crowded parking lot but got hung up at St Mary getting our backpacking permit for the following day. Despite a little fog / low clouds we fully expected a full lot as we pulled in at 9:00 to ...

Sun, Rain, Snow, Repeat: GNP Sept 2014

We had so much anticipation and excitement for our third trip to GNP. Great advice and inspiration from all on the forum and others had resulted in a 13 day itinerary with 2 three night backpacking trips, 2 summit attempts, 2 off trail treks and several day hikes. Our first day was a short off trail...

Re: Trip report Glacier 2014 in video form

The goat video was super. The speed they can generate on steep terrain is unreal. The underwater bull moose was something I have never seen. I guess a moose will not float at all. Thanks for sharing.

Re: G9: 8/28-9/14, 2014..."Back Home Again"

The hike up to the pass was tough but one we (Todd, Bruce, Jen, Pam, Jim) will remember and use as a benchmark for years to come. It is one of those rare times when one can enter a state of "flow". Time seems to stand still, you are totally involved in the task at hand, unsure of the outco...

Re: My drinking club has a hiking problem.

Bruce is quite correct about how bad the conditions were going up to Gunsight Pass and the pictures do not come close to showing how the horizontal rain then sleet then snow affected your progress. The wind was in our face all the way to the pass. Had some fleeting views of Gunsight and Ellen but fo...

I was going to give you a hard time for not doing Grinnell Glacier Overlook but I saw the Lookout pictures and think you made the better decision. I had the same burger at Chili's at the MSP airport and will post the almost exact picture in my TR!!

Re: Bear Can

Not aware of the requirement for bear canister in GNP at established BC sites. Do need a food sack and 25 feet of rope.

Here is what really happened at fifty mountain a couple of weeks ago (this is on tripadvisor forum) "did a backcountry trip 2-weeks ago and at fifty mountain we had a griz saunter by us at 35 yards while we were in the cooking area. He then circled up and ended up ripping open my tent and tryin...

Here a short (10 min) video narrated by Robert Redford. Beautiful time lapse video of Glacier interacting with the clouds, it is called "Walk in the Clouds".

Re: How far are the ledges on the Highline (HockeyRef) trail

I had rubber tips on my poles. When we got to the end of the "hose section," I decided the poles were worthless and literally ran back to the car to drop them off. Jay Do you suggest rubber or metal tips on poles for general trail use at Glacier, I just traded mine out to metal. We are ar...
