Re: Lodging with Bathroom Rising Sun to Many Glacier

Thank you everyone for your help. My wife and I sat down with my parents over the weekend to do a bit of planning and they ended up backing out on the trip. So we will be doing the campground thing now which we have a good handle on.

Lodging with Bathroom Rising Sun to Many Glacier

I am starting (2 hours ago) to plan a return trip at the start of July this year, my parents will be tagging along this trip, and my mother refuses to stay anywhere that does not have an attached restroom (aka "I do not want to have to put on my shoes in the middle of the night"), so that ...

Re: Solar chargers

Packing a laptop and solar charger sounds heavy. I know when I was looking at solar chargers for boating needs they were not cheap either. Have you looked into getting a small lightweight tablet that could work for photo storage while hiking? I use an Asus TF tablet (its a few generations old at thi...

Looks like a good way to get a lot done in a very short window.

Re: Drone incidents in national parks

I believe drone use should be by permit only in the parks. The images that come from someone that knows what they are doing is amazing. I also believe that who ever was flying this one should be charged with all the expense of getting it out of the thermal (that is if they can without doing damage t...

Re: pod? tri vs mono

You will always see a tripod strapped to my pack, daytrip or overnight. However you will seldom see me extending the legs out at every vista as I hardly ever shoot from eye level. I will also prop the tripod on a rock or log or wall vs extending legs. I would say 80% of my photos in the park were ta...

When will reservations open for 2015

I have emailed twice with no response from Xanterra about opening date for reservations for summer 2015. Does anyone know this info yet?

Re: North fork suggestions

O I will as my trip gets closer (not till July/August of 2015) I will be posting a proposed plan, and I always write up TR's for my vacations. I learn so much from the boards I visit I like to give back.

Re: North fork suggestions

Don't quote me on this, but I believe I saw somewhere that the cabins at the Merc weren't going to be available for overnight rental this summer. At any rate, they're extremely basic. My preference would definitely be for one of the cabins at the hostel. Mark Good to know I have the hostels website...

Re: North fork suggestions

If you're willing to go MUCH more basic (i.e. outhouse for bathroom), there are also some cabins that are located right next to the Merc. I stayed there once a few years ago when I had to catch an early flight and didn't want to have to pack a wet tent in the dark. Not nearly as much character as t...

Re: North fork suggestions

The Forest Service cabins are nearly all great, but the ones along the North Fork Road are VERY popular during peak season, and getting a reservation is a challenge. You can reserve them 180 days in advance, and for a July/August visit you typically need to make your reservation first thing in the ...

Re: Summer snow?

Glacier seams to get the same weather we get here in Portland just a day or two later. We just got slammed with rain yesterday, Portland has a combined sewage / runoff system that overflowed into the Willamete river  and people wonder why we dont take our boat out of the Columbia and into the...
