Re: Big fee increases may be in the future...

And once you hit 62 years old, you only have to buy an $80 pass once and it is good for ALL the parks, for the rest of your life . And you get half-price camping and other amenities too. Wow. (Or, you can just spend $20 for an annual senior pass if you aren't the betting sort... ) So...

Re: request for permit trade late August Northern Loop

Not to rain on your parade but it's going to be impossible to trade. There are only a few campsites available at each campground, and so its very likely that exact advanced itinerary (those dates and sites) doesn't even exist as trips through that area may pick up different sites/different days/diff...

Re: So what new piece of gear have you purchased lately?

My most recent purchase was the Tarp Tent I bought last year for our family trip to Cloud Peak Wilderness. We needed a 4 person lightweight tent and the Hogback has been amazing! Love it! https://www.tarptent.com/hogback.html I have my eye on a new sleeping bag for this year (handing my Mountain Ha...

We're all pretty bullish on a semi-early opening it seems.

Re: Gunsight Pass Trail Camping

Honestly, I've always made sure to bring at least 35ft of rope. While some of the food hanging poles are only 10-12ft in the air, there are a couple of campsites in the park in which they are probably 16+ft. I like to be able to throw my rope over the pole, then hook up my food and from there just l...

Re: Hammock Camping in the Backcountry

Yes, I think you really have to plan on at least some nights staying in either a tent or a bivy. Which at that point, if you have to bring a tent/bivy for at least some nights you'll have to decide whether it's worth it to lug a hammock (I realize they are relatively compact/light-ish) in addition t...

Re: Hammock Camping in the Backcountry

I can't speak specifically about each individual campground you list as I haven't been to all of them, but just in general I would think it would be pretty difficult to plan to hammock camp on an extended trip in GNP. Even though you use a hammock and not a tent, you're still required to stay in the...

Re: National Parks Pass

Even at $80 it's still a bargain. Just for comparisons sake look at what canada does. While this year is canada's 150yr national park celebration, so entrance is free, they usually charge ~$20/day or something in the range of $140/yr. I just hope as much money as possible does go to the NPS. Just fo...

Re: Nyack Loop

I haven't done this either, but I am curious how the fire from 2-summers ago affected things. I've wondered if it may have opened up views that didn't exist from the trail previously... and it may not have. But it seems reasonable.

Re: New latrine at Hole?

They don't pull it out every year. It gets pretty beat up by the high snow depth at hole in the wall (I would assume it gets buried under 20-40ft of snow during the winter). I remember going through there in 2014 and you could see where things were headed. As a structural engineer, I'd love for the ...

1. Not readily available. A few of the gift shops in places like rising sun and many glacier will have some basics like ramen, and I think I saw last summer the gift shops carrying a couple of the mountain house freeze dried meals, but your options are going to be very limited. The gift shops aren't...

Re: Best GNP off-trail/climbing book?

I haven't yet done much off-trail, although I have both the edwards and passmore collections. I personally prefer the passmore collection for the opposite reason to Paul. When I get off trail and the book tells me to head up a gully, and I look at the mountainside and see 8 different gullies I get e...

Dawson-Pitamakan
Highline
Siyeh
Ptarmigan
Grinnell Glacier

I really wanted to figure out a way to include something more off the beaten path, but there is a reason the popular hikes are ON the beaten path.

Re: Grinnell Glacier with kids

You're kids should be fine as others have said. They should be fine as long as they are physically able to do the hike. For what little its worth I did this hike for the first time when I was 6 years old. I was tired and sore afterwards... but I hadn't jumped or fallen off the mountain :D
