Re: 2024 Lottery Results

Sigh. Unsuccessful. As was someone else I know who is not on the chat, but unfortunately I can't add another vote to the poll on their behalf...Maybe the mod can?

Anyway, I hope the rest of you get the permit of your dreams!

That's good to hear. For their sake, let's hope it stays that way.

Re: Sad News - David Parker has passed away

Debby, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. And of the loss to all who knew and cared about Dave. I never met Dave. Indeed, I don't believe I ever had a single direct interaction with him. However, by creating and hosting this site, he profoundly touched my life, and made it immeasurably better. For ...

Re: NPS closures and alerts

And now it looks like the whole park may be closing... https://flatheadbeacon.com/2020/03/25/bullock-requests-closure-glacier-national-park-amid-covid-19-concerns/ "In Whitefish, whose tourism-based economy is largely dependent on visitation to Glacier National Park, Mayor John Muhlfeld minced ...

Re: Sleeping pads for the vertically challenged

Thanks for sharing that, Teapot.

The pictures not only help make the concept a little less scary, but seeing the radiant barrier inside also gave me an "aha!" moment about the importance of always using your insulated sleeping pad with the correct side facing up! (Duh.)

Re: Bad Visitor Behavior at GNP

I did find a bag of trash in Glacier once that had a receipt from a park hotel in it, with the drivers license number and address in it of those who left it, I packed it up and I sent it back to them in Manitoba, I am sure they were surprised when they opened that box! Oooh! God Bless You, Dave! :D

Re: Tent Problems

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Big Agnes Copper Spur 1-person tent. It is the older, slightly heavier (but IMO much more functional) model with a small, zippered pass-through that lets you stay inside the tent and reach out the non-door side to access gear stored under the fly. It totally rocks! But, after sev...

What a cool idea! I never would have thought of that. And even if I had, I doubt I’d have had the guts to try it. Yay you! 8)

Do let us know how it holds up!

Re: 2019 Backcountry Permits

I had actually been playing with the idea using mylar, but I hadn't thought about making sure that it won't trap water. Good point. Maybe I'll make a bottomless mylar bell-like thing over my dry sack. Allowing for a bit of air between it and the stuff sack will also help with keeping the stuff sack ...

Re: Sleeping pads for the vertically challenged

I use a Big Agnes Q-core SLX in the petite size (66" x 20"). One of the really nice things about the shorter length (in addition to less weight and a smaller packed size) is that I can lie my backpack flat at the foot of my tent without the pad getting in the way. No more problems with the...

Re: 2019 Backcountry Permits

My son and I did St Mary's to Two Medicine last year and stayed the first night at REF. From what I recall, Red Eagle Foot (REF), Atlantic Creek (ATL), and Morning Star Lake (MOR) all had bear poles for hanging food bags.... I'd imagine it's a pole setup as well since all of the others in that area...
