Re: Sleeping bag

Thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear. I'm taking long johns just in case a freak cold snap comes through.

Sleeping bag

I'm doing the North Circle between August 11 and August 17. Should I take my 30 degree sleeping bag or my 5 degree one? I am warm sleeper.

Advanced Reservability on GNP website

I just noticed that the Advanced Reservability link is now working on the GNP website in the backcountry section. Hope this isn't old news.

Re: Campground Question

Pocketlint,

If I am unable to swap Flattop for Granite Park on my permit, my car will be parked at Packer's Roost. Will I be able to walk from the St. Mary's Visitor Center to the Johnson Campground?

Campground Question

I'm arriving at St. Mary Visitor Center around 4:00pm on a Saturday in August (coming from Great Falls ). I start hiking the North Circle from Many Glacier on Sunday. I'll be too late to get a first come/first serve GNP campsite and Swift Current Motor Inn is full. I know St. Mary CG is mostly an RV...

Re: Where to buy supplies near East Glacier

You can buy Counter Assalut brand 8.1 oz size with holster all day for 39.95 or less in area stores. Just buy when you get here. You're driving right? pocketlint [/quote] We are flying into Great Falls and renting a car and driving to St. Mary to pick up our permit and hopefully swap FLA for G...

Where to buy supplies near East Glacier

I'm flying into Great Falls and driving to St. Mary. I have two questions:
1)What is the best route to take?
2) Where to buy stove fuel (Isopro canister and denatured alcohol) and bear spray?

Re: 2013 Backcountry Permits!!!!

I thought that since FLA was night 6 that I wouldn't need to be at the permit office first thing the day before in order to switch FLA for GRN. Actually, I couldn't be there that soon anyway because I'm flying in from Baltimore, MD to Great Falls the day before the trip starts. I'll probably be at t...

Re: Air Travel with a backpack

Read the airline small print regarding what cannot be checked such as stove fuel, bear spray, etc. All sharps such as knives can be checked but not carried on. Also read the rules regarding fluids such as sunscreen, bug spray, etc.

Tents per site

I know the GNP lists two two-person tents per site, but was wondering if a three-person tent and a solo would be acceptable. I don't want to bother the Rangers while they are busy with the busy permit season. It looks as if I might have three guys and one lady going on my trip and I'm not sure how s...

Re: 2013 Backcountry Permits!!!!

A buddy of mine told me that Flattop was burned out a few years ago and not very nice. Has anyone been there in the past year?

Re: 2013 Backcountry Permits!!!!

Figure out a way to do the shuttling before the start of your backpack. Instead of leaving your car at the loop park it at Packers Roost. That way your will have no uphill between the Flattop campsite and your vehicle. How does this plan sound? 1) Drive from Great Falls to St. Mary's Visitor Center...

Re: 2013 Backcountry Permits!!!!

I think the east side shuttle will take you from St. Mary to MG, though you'll have to pay for that shuttle. I think it's around $ 10 pp. Heff Just found the scheduled times on line for the shuttle from St. Mary's to Many Glacier. It is $10, thanks for the info. I feel better now that I know I can ...

Re: 2013 Backcountry Permits!!!!

The problem is my car will be in Many Glacier. I will have to shuttle to Logan Pass, change shuttles to St. Mary, and then find a way from St. Mary to Many Glacier.
