Re: My drinking club has a hiking problem.

Ah...the transition from summer hiking to winter hiking. In the summer small mistakes are just an inconvenience. In the winter small mistakes become major problems where it dawns on you that you could die. Once you have lived through a minor mistake in winter conditions you will never look at gear a...

Re: Sad death in the park

1. I'm almost sure Siyeh doesn't require equipment to climb...ok, maybe a rain suit. Isn't there a picture of Jen on Siyeh hunched over in exhaustion? 2. I looked a map and there appears to be a pretty steep cliff starting at about 9700 ft that drops to the glacier, which is in the 7000-7300 ft are...

Re: Sad death in the park

Continuing past, "Weiher’s body was discovered attached to a deployed parachute" the article goes on to say: “Our initial investigation leads us to believe he did jump with a parachute,” she said, but “we don’t know for sure” whether he jumped or accidentally fell before he was able to jum...

Re: Sad death in the park

Years ago I worked in both SAR and EMS. There is a rule that you NEVER EVER endanger yourself in an attempt to save another life. Since this was a recovery versus a rescue, I am sure things slowed down quite a bit once they got there. Some members of SAR like the more difficult searches and rescues....

Re: Our Last Trip to GNP

Indiscretions or not...I LOVED your trip report! I desperately hope you write another one. You're a wonderful story teller.

No need to fret over a few unhappy members. Your still my favorite criminal.

As for the offending rodent, I'll set him straight when I hike down there on Monday.

Re: Many Glacier Webcam?

If I recall the Many Glacier Cam was run over single-mode fiber. Direct Communications and electricity isn't really required. I believe that the Apgar Mtn cam uses satellite for communications and solar for power. When they first installed it the cost were about $50/month for the satellite. The cam ...

Re: Many Glacier Webcam?

It has been a while since I read about how the web cams came about. Here is how I remember it: In the beginning, visitors paid for the cams, and the park put them in and ran them. I believe that the Many Glacier cam died, and was never replaced. This was before the growth of social media. When socia...

Re: Fifty Mountain

If the hiker is experienced, he might have cooked close to his tent or sleeping bag elsewhere in the country prior to visiting GNP. Or, someone else might have cooked near his tent or sleeping bag. In other parts of the country people are very naive about cooking near their sleeping bags and tents. ...

Re: Solar chargers

I have two solar rechargers. They can output 3.3 and 5v used b the MB. You would have to have a way to get the power into the laptop. Most power adaptors run between 12-19v. You could possible find a way to charge the battery, but I am not sure how. I don't think you could charge it from a USB port....

Re: How far are the ledges on the Highline (HockeyRef) trail

Poles originated with the ski industry. All ski poles have metal tips. The metal tips work exceptionally well on snow and ice. Then ski poles migrated to the hiking industry. Most people just use the metal tips when hiking. The rubber tips work well when hiking on solid rock. Metal tips on solid roc...

Re: first trip is in the can

Sounds like you and daughter had a great time in Glacier. The place is pretty addicting. Here are a couple of tips to reduce your muscle issues: Most beginning hikers do not drink enough water while hiking. As they become dehydrated, their bodies become polluted with impurities. Once you become dehy...

Re: How far are the ledges on the Highline (HockeyRef) trail

The good thing about the Highline Trail is that the exposure is at the very beginning of the hike (Logan Pass side). So, if you need to bail, you can go hike somewhere else. The section with exposure above the road isn't that long, and it has a cable attached to the wall, which helps people with a f...

It is interesting that you are 3 times more likely to die of a vehicle accident then be killed by a bear.

Re: Hiker injured while descending Siyeh

It wasn't on the trail. They were both descending Siyeh. The hiker first yelled for help. When he didn't get the response he was looking for, he discharged the gun. Hikers on the trail heard both the yelling and the gun shot. I would move in the opposite direct of a gun shot. A whistle is the univer...
