Re: A Special, Final Message

Andy, aka Hockey Ref, We've never met, but your stories here have made me crave to see every bit of Glacier that I can. I know there are areas I'll never see until after I take that 'final hike'. I've yet to make it to a pass in Glacier, but rest assured that when I do, I'll find a worthy rock at th...

Re: Stove for car camping

For car camping we use our Jetboil stoves to make coffee in the morning or a quick Mountain House lunch on the trail, and our Coleman 2 burner to cook breakfast on. Also nice to heat a pot of water for doing dishes/washing faces afterwards. Not something I'd lug in my pack, but for the small footpri...

Re: Glacier to get postage stamp

If anybody wants a "First-day-of-issue" postmarked stamp, they can still obtain one: As of Thursday, stamp purchasers have 60 days to obtain the First-Day-of-Issue postmark by mail. After purchasing the stamps, they should affix them to envelopes of their choice, address them to themselves...

Re: Who's pocketlint and why does he post so much?

I've run into Pocketlint at least once on the trail to Avalanche Lake. I'm sure I'll run into him at some point this winter snowshoeing too!

We got about the same in Kalispell, with the exception of that tasty looking roast!

Hibernating bears in the open

This isn't in Glacier, but it very well could be. Earlier this year I was relating a story to Ranger Folett? (forgive me if I spelled your name wrong!) at the Apgar Visitor center about snowshoeing last year. Last year when we had lots of snow, my wife and I went snowshoeing down along McDonald Cree...

Re: Skiers stranded overnight in Park

I'm glad they're ok, but if they WERE hurt, they would have been charged big bucks for the helicopter ride back, vs a free lift for merely being lost. I agree that a weather forecast, map, compass and a GPS would be in order instead of relying on a SPOT. Maybe a birthday present for next year?? On a...

Re: Anyone using an HRM?

My wife just got me a Polar HRM for Christmas that can run with a couple apps on my Android phone. It's a chest strap model that connects via Bluetooth. I've tried it out walking the dogs and at the gym and so far has changed my mindset on what activities get the heart rate up. I haven't had a chanc...

Lewis Glacier Hotel

I thought I'd post this as a new topic so Tom's post doesn't get too far off topic. As I mentioned there, I recently learned that a relative of mine was John E Lewis, developer of the Lewis Glacier Hotel. If anybody has some tidbits on it, I'd love to hear them. I'll check out the book "View wi...

Re: Old Timers in Glacier

Well Tom, I'm guessing that your great-Uncle and my...distant cousin? worked together. He was John E. Lewis, developer of the Lewis Glacier Hotel, later renamed Lake McDonald Lodge after Louis Hill bought it. Wish I knew more, but just found this out over Christmas. He was my Grandma's 2nd Cousin.

Re: Half $%&# Walk Towards Apgar Lookout 12-22-11

Nice effort Pocketlint! I have a pair of Columbia Bugaboo 600G boots that I use for snowshoeing. I think they were rated to -15F. They are a 'hightop' boot that comes up way above the ankle, but IMO this works well with preventing ankleroll, especially when snowshoeing. I've yet to get cold in them,...

Re: bear spray

Hey Dave, since we're on the subject of test firing... I showed my wife how to spray her's last year (one quick burst out in a field behind our house). Since both cans of Counter Assault have been 'fired' a year ago, will this affect their reliability any? As in, will they lose pressure or pepper 'p...

Re: Did I do right by Tiz?

I would say "good luck getting IN to Sportsman by noon tomorrow!" I think he would much rather spend time in Glacier with the good weather than standing in line for 3 hours just to pick up stuff he already paid for.

August Singularity from Aug 5th Daily Interlake: Old fire dogs have talked about the "August Singularity" for years, firmly believing in a Northern Rockies weather phenomenon with powerful influences on wildfire behavior. But recent research now has documented this firefighting folklore as...
