Re: Rental Car Prices at FCA

Slightly off-topic from FCA, though still relevant: I returned a car to Bozeman. There must have been 50-60 cars in the Avis-Budget return area, none being attended. The sole person in evidence was directing incoming cars to lanes. My bill was ready 5 days later. So lack of staffing may be contribut...

Re: Hay Creek Fire

Thanks, teapot57!

Map of closed area, Hay Creek Fire, west of Polebridge. Backcountry permits are not being issued for several sites across (east of) the Flathead:

Re: Hwy 2 Camping

Couple of things I picked up on TripAdvisor Glacier: 1. Road into Cut Bank is closed at the ranger station. Must park and walk ca. 1/2 mile to reach trailheads. 2. Two Medicine parking was full one day (probably a lot of days) and cars were being turned back. 3. The pressure on GttSR has simply move...

Re: Rental Car Prices at FCA

Chip , This is a nationwide problem. Unless you are locked into FCA, check GEG (Spokane). Rentals are much cheaper there. Also try other airports. Agencies sold off inventory last year and likely will not build back up until business travel resumes. Also, there is or was a chip shortage, introducin...

Re: Hwy 2 Camping

In re Devil Creek, the slider labeled Season Opens--Season Closes I took to mean the opening and closing dates of the campground in toto, not just reservable period. (I did pass by it in Sept when it was closed for the season.) Summit CG is just a bit farther up the road. Lots of trees between sites...

Re: Hwy 2 Camping

Devil Creek is a favorite, but it looks as though the campground closes Sept. 11. Summit Campground, at Marias Pass, is open later. It is more oriented toward larger RVs but still wooded and quiet. https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/hlcnf/recarea/?recid=61568 Along Rte 2 there are other sites for one o...

Move Logan Pass to West Glacier.
Throw in some mountain goats in a petting zoo.
Done and dusted. :D

Re: Corridor Management Plan

Thanks for posting the link!

I see the numbers for Siyeh for 2015 and 2019 listed as "N/A" (counting was not done).
But your point is well taken, here at least.

Pizza Bob , You probably cannot do that as a commercial service, but you may accept gifts. Story with several morals here: "Man Charged with Organizing Illegal 153-Person Hike in Grand Canyon" https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1266521 Authorities are on him for, among other things, soliciting bu...

Re: Ticketed Entry Issue

Chip , Recreation.gov is a scheduling app. I would rely on the Park (but print out any correspondence from the Park). Usually on-site park managers have authority to make decisions. Rec.gov is run on contract from the government by a private company, Booze-Allen-Hamilton. An interesting article (ha...

Re: 2021 Backcountry Permit Applications: Date for submittal now March 17

Paul , I really enjoyed your Winds trip. Had in mind possibly trying to link the Winds to my two Yellowstone backpacks in September (Canada being closed), but the distance between is too great. So I hope you are able to develop another fine itinerary. (From someone who has haunted car reservation s...

Gorgeous photos, Paul! In re entry reservation ticket, per the link: "Entry Reservation Ticket OR Service Reservation" Below is a bulleted point; I take it to mean everything listed is a Service Reservation [my bold]: This includes visitors with overnight accommodations, including Village Inn, Lake ...

Work in the Park and get paid: Glacier Guides 2021

Glacier Guides is recruiting for 2021 positions: https://glacierguides.submittable.com/submit  And if you can't wait, Izaak Walton Inn has groomed trails and lotta snow. In past years, the Inn offered guided backcountry -- in Glacier! -- skiing, then moved that operation over to Glacier Guide...

Book by MGH Winterkeepers

Old-timers here may remember a charming blog by Many Glacier's winterkeepers, a husband-and-wife team. Around 2013-2014. They decided to retire from winterkeeping and start a family (though David Wilson may still be doing summer maintenance on Many Glacier Hotel). They have produced a book about the...
