Re: Logan Pass crowds - 8 a.m.

Took me 3 hours and 35 minutes to get from Apgar to Logan’s on Monday August 6th! I misjudged the time it would take me to drive to Apgar from my campground on the east side at Johnson’s and made terrible time driving after waking up at 4 am. I only arrived at the Apgar transit station at 7:00 and w...

Re: Using your iPhone as your primary back country GPS

Viking hiker - that is a cool app! Thanks for sharing. FYI the free version has probably been updated since you downloaded... it limits viewing to only 1 map tile at a time... I downloaded the $5 'Pro' version. I don't even want to use this as a GPS app but just as a map viewer... it works even bett...

Re: Sleeping Kit

Check out Sierra Design's back country bed sleeping bags: https://sierradesigns.com/bed-style/ I bought a bivvy sack from Sierra Designs that is meant to work with the back country bed (these sleeping bags are a bit heavier than mummy bags). If you are front country camping the synthetic bags are mu...

Re: Using your iPhone as your primary back country GPS

Good read Thorn. it has been so long since I had an Etrex that I forgot about gps coverage disappearing in the trees. Oh well the rest of the time the phone gps should be ok. have you checked out a program called oziexplorer? I used to use it but just went with Garmins map source years ago. Anyways ...

Re: Using your iPhone as your primary back country GPS

Paul -I agree with you about the SLR's being better - I hauled one along on my last BC ski trip but it was freezing and I was with a fast group and I had trouble keeping pace... I would have to stop completely to get at my DSLR, which was in my pack (as a result I hardly took any photos). Sometimes ...

Re: Using your iPhone as your primary back country GPS

Thanks for the feedback - I really appreciate the info. I have always been worried about the accuracy of iphone GPS's and having to depend on them in areas with no cell coverage... As a trial I did some geocach'ing on the wkend with my phone in airplane mode and the accuracy was quite good (found 2 ...

Using your iPhone as your primary back country GPS

I took the plunge and just sold off my Garmin unit. All new Cellphones have GPS installed and will work without a cell signal... I’ve decided to go with Gaia GPS based on friend’s recommendation. It was a free download but I expect that there will be a subscription fee required at some point. You ca...

Re: Heavy snow at East Glacier

We were skiing at whitefish from the 27th to the 30th and drove the south boundary of the park via Marias Pass to Browning on the 30th... GREAT skiing and and we thought about staying another night rather than heading out into the storm but we couldn’t extend our accommodations. By late morning on t...

Re: Smoke?

Glad you didn't cancel your trip and the haze cleared up... I hiked to Grinell Glacier with my kids on Saturday as well... I agree that it was pretty much a perfect day! The smoke started to blow on a bit in the pm but it cleared up by late afternoon... There were surprisingly lots of people out on ...

Re: The burning of Sperry Chalet

Just look at the Waterton fire... there were a ton of resources set to fight the blaze and the dang thing exploded in area by 80,000 acres in one night! They managed thus far to save the village but still lost a number of park buildings/facilities including the visitor centre and horse stables... Wh...

Re: Fire

Hopefully today's precip slows things down... the fire has the potential to run south into Glacier if it jumps the ridge at Cameron lake (it's just north of chapman and Custer right now... or could run down towards kintla Lake too).

Re: August '17 - Glacier's 2nd busiest month on record

Check it out, monthly visitation stats since 1979: https://irma.nps.gov/Stats/SSRSReports/Park%20Specific%20Reports/Recreation%20Visitors%20By%20Month%20(1979%20-%20Last%20Calendar%20Year)?Park=GLAC I would offer that it is not just a social media induced, foreign visitor nor hipster fad-phenom that...
