Re: Belly River front country campground, Waterton Lakes NP

A year late on this post, but my partner and I spent a glorious night car camping over Labor Day weekend 2017 at the Belly River Campground in Waterton Lakes National Park, a few miles north of the US-Canadian border crossing at Chief Mountain Customs. We arrived early (around 8am) on the Friday of ...

Re: Arrow Lake via Rogers Meadow

Based on recent reports of the Howe Ridge Fire burning 150' feet from the Inside North Fork Road, I'm not sure how relevant this post will be in the coming years. That being said, I hiked from the Camas Creek trailhead north of Fish Creek Campground off the Inside North Fork Road all the way to the ...

Re: Howe Ridge Fire Intensified

Terrible fires! Ironically this is the first year in the last 17 that we decided not to go to Glacier. We were there in the '03 fires and that seemed quite bad. This may be worse. :( Fortunately, I don't think the acreage burned is anywhere near what happened in 2003. I believe 10% of the park burn...

Re: East Glacier to Many Glacier shuttle?

- Yes, if traveling from East Glacier to Many Glacier you would need to transfer in St. Mary. - It looks like daily departures from East Glacier are now at 8:45 AM and 12:45 PM. There are no stops (to the best of my knowledge), so that drive will likely take the shuttle driver an hour and change. I ...

Belly River front country campground, Waterton Lakes NP

We have a very brief Labor Day trip coming up, and are thinking of camping at the Belly River front country campground, just north of the Canadian border in Waterton Lakes NP. It's first-come, first-served and we've never been... Not sure if anyone can help forecast whether or not we'll find a site ...

Re: Many Glacier trail overpasses damaged

Quite the story! Since they encountered what appeared to be original, rotting materials, sounds like the bridges are in need of an upgrade regardless. Hopefully they can scrounge together the funding sooner rather than later; as many of you know, the parking lot at MGH is a nightmare even with the b...

Re: Porcupines decline in Western Montana

Interesting, thank you for sharing. I believe I have only encountered one porcupine in western Montana. We came upon one near the outhouse on the Iceberg Lake Trail, just downhill from Ptarmigan Falls. Hopefully biologists can get figure out what's going on with this intriguing critter.

Re: Mount Oberlin

How doable is Mount Oberlin for a couple of 50+ year olds from the prairies? We have a fair bit of hiking experience in Glacier and Rocky Mountain NP (Highline, Loop to Granite Park, Apgar Mtn., Iceberg Lake, Hidden Lake, Siyeh Pass), and will be back this summer to do Ptarmigan Tunnel, Swiftcurren...

Those folks definitely were too close for comfort! Amazing what people will do to capture a poor quality photo on their point-and-shoot or camera phones these days. Live to see another day.
