Shangri-La

Hi everyone, We're heading to GNP in three days for our 5th visit to the park. We've done many of the classic hikes, and while we would certainly be happy repeating some, we would like to try a few new ones. One that's on our list is Shangri-La to Iceberg Lake. I've been trying to find some info on ...

Re: Swiftcurrent Restaurant

The pizza at Swiftcurrent was definitely better this year than last year, but the rest of the food was really lousy - especially breakfast.

Glacier's Edge Cafe - GREAT BREAKFASTS!

The Glacier's Edge Cafe is located across the street from Thronsons in Babb. I don't ever remember reading about it on the chat board before, but somehow came across a review on TripAdvisor. We ended up eating there 3 times during our recent trip to GNP, and I can't even tell you how much we enjoyed...

Re: Gunsight Trail Status

No, the marmots were too tired to throw rocks, and the goats must have sent their leather jackets out for cleaning :D

Re: Gunsight Trail Status

We hiked Gunsight on August 3rd and crossed the four snowfields. The first one (coming up from Gunsight Lake) was definitely the steepest and scariest. We used yak trax and hiking polls and had no difficulty, although a fall on that one would not have ended well. One of our hiking partners was too n...

Re: A Special, Final Message

Andy, While we have never met and have only exchanged a few messages on here, I can't tell you how much joy you have brought to me and my family. Whenever I posted a question, I knew that in a few hours, there would be a response from HockeyRef. Your knowledge and passion for GNP have helped us to f...

Re: Pitamakan and Dawson Pass Loop

Logistics question - if we were to stay at Rising Sun or St. Mary the night before Daw-Pit, how long would it take us to drive to the trailhead? We can stay in East Glacier the night before but that means another hotel switch (which we are already doing a number of times). Plus, if I have to drive f...

Where to stay the night before Daw-Pit?

Hi again,

Planning on hiking Daw-Pit this summer. We are not campers, so I need to book a hotel that is close enough to the trail head for us to get an early start. Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Seth

St. Mary Lodge or Rising Sun?

Hi all, We have one night booked at Sperry Chalet for this coming summer. We want to stay on the east side of the park the night before and the night after for easy access to/from the Gunsight Pass trail head. Any thoughts or recommendations on whether I should book St. Mary Lodge or Rising Sun? Tha...

Sperry Chalet hikes

Hi all, So excited about this summer's trip to GNP (without the kids this time!). We are going to hike up to Sperry Chalet via the Gunsight Pass trail and spend one night at the chalet. The following morning, after breakfast, we'd like to hike over to Sperry Glacier (or at least the overlook) but we...

Driving an RV

Hi all, We'll be meeting friends in GNP this summer and they will be driving an RV. They are under the impression that they can't drive their RV anywhere on the GTTS Road. I thought that on the west side they would be able to drive as far as Lake McDonald Lodge. Is that true? Also, can they drive on...

Re: Grinnell Glacier question

Thank you all for your responses. My wife and I have been to Iceberg Lake twice in the last three years, so we don't feel the need to go back right now. I think we will either try Grinnell Glacier with the boat shuttle, or hike the Swiftcurrent Valley. My only fear about Swiftcurrent that is that af...

Grinnell Glacier question

Hi all, We are heading out to Glacier next week, and for the first time, will be bringing our kids (ages 7 and 9). We are planning on keeping our hikes short (Hidden Lake, Trail of the Cedars, St. Mary and Virginia Falls, etc.), but would like to attempt the Grinnell Glacier Trail. Here's what I'm t...

What to do after a night at Sperry Chalet?

Hi all, Planning on hiking from the Jackson Overlook up to Gunsight Pass and then to Sperry Chalet for a night. When we wake up in the morning, what would you recommend we do? How long is the hike down to Lake McDonald? Is there time to do some hiking up by the Chalet before heading down to Lake McD...
