Re: Piegan Pass, Bears, Big Horns, & a Golden Mantle Squirre

Pete, they were still there at 5:30 this evening. She is the grumpiest bear I've encountered in years. Be careful up there.

Goat Haunt fire???

Just checked the park webcams. Looks like a possible fire on the Goat Haunt webcam. Hope it is my imagination....

Here is a screen shot

Re: New fire in Glacier???

Jen, a friend from the Blankenship area said firefighters were mopping up the fire in the North Fork. Hopefully it is a done deal.

Re: New fire in Glacier???

Size of the Thompson ck fire has been increased to 1900 acres. I thought the earlier 150 acre estimate seemed low considering the massive amount of smoke released.

Re: New fire in Glacier???

Here are some pics of the Thompson fire I took on the way home yesterday. It looked pretty violent, I hope everyone was able to get out of its path. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/417/20450814592_283316e93d_c.jpg [/url] Thompson ck fire smoke column by Kelly Morgan , on Flickr https://farm1.staticfl...

Re: Sad death in the park

It's always sad when someone dies in the park. What I just can't wrap my head around is people making insulting comments about them. Sure, I can understand being disrespectful to evil people like Hitler or Pol Pot. But insulting someone who is seeking adventure or testing themselves is unfathomable ...

Re: Fall trip wildlife hotspots

For moose and bears Many Glacier is a great spot. Bears can often be seen on the slopes of Mt Altyn and Henkel. A young light colored grizzly named Silver has been frequenting the Windy Flats area recently. Although large bear jams have been forming so I usually just drive by. The most popular moose...

Re: travel in snow conditions

The road was getting slick when I drove over it this morning. I just checked the park website and it looks like they just closed the road. Hopefully they will get it open soon.

They usually close the road road before chains are needed. Snow tires can be helpful though.

Re: Ptarmigan Creek crossing

I crossed it last week. The upstream support has collapsed and the bridge is tilted in that direction. I had no problems crossing it dry, but if it was wet it could be slippery. I won't say if it is safe or not safe, hikers need to decide that for themselves. If a person did fall in the creek they w...

Re: Divide / Henkel

I like that building as well Pitamakin. The building always makes me think of Gordon Edwards. There was an informal memorial to him for several years inside the lookout. Here is what it looked like last summer- https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7421/13989213665_0fee264126_c.jpg Divide Mtn Lookout by jk...

Re: Divide / Henkel

I just returned from the east side last night. The Mt Henkel/ Altyn closure is in effect to allow goats and sheep to give birth unmolested, so the regular routes are off-limits. Crowfeet and Apikuni are open if you are interested in either of those peaks. The regular route on Divide mtn is snow free...

Re: Some local birds

Here are some pics of some rough legs I took yesterday. I'm not sure if they were bonding or fighting, but it was fun to watch. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8112/8594792324_d69edd0ac1_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8229/8593692807_a83c305587_c.jpg But it not just about birds of prey... Re: Some local birds

Thanks for the kind words everyone. @Calico- that Waxwing is beautiful, I don't think I've seen one of those yet. Pete PM'ed me some questions and suggested I answer them here, so I will take his advise. I'm using an entry level Nikon the D5100 with one of their kit lens a 55-300mm. A would not reco...

A more informative article came out this morning. http://www.missoulian.com/news/state-and-regional/private-dollars-will-pay-to-plow-glacier-park-s-sun/article_864cbb1a-965f-11e2-b7eb-0019bb2963f4.html I'm curious if local businesses have helped the conservancy pay for this. Some local birds

Hi everyone, hope you all had a good winter. I've been dealing with knee issues this winter that have kept me from doing my normal snow sliding and climbing activities. So a friend suggested I take up bird watching. It is something I can do to get outside while being easy on my leg. I'm in love with...
